Flowers In Season For A Winter Wedding

Today sees my final post in my four part series on what flowers are in season for your wedding. Today I'm looking at winter weddings. Immediate thoughts of winter weddings are red roses and lots of evergreen pine but there are a lot more options that you would think.
Of course the list below is just my favourites and make sure you check with your florist about what they can provide for you on the exact date of your wedding.

Cosmos

Cosmos is such a beautiful little flower - it come in many colours but I particularly love the 'Chocolate' variety for winter wedding bouquets.

Amaryllis

A great statement flower for winter and in a surprising variety of colours. I would go classic with silver green foliage and winter white amaryllis or the gorgeous deep hued burgundy flowers.

Paperwhites



These gorgeous small flowers look amazing on their own en-masse or equally at home accenting larger flowers in a bouquet or arrangement.



Pussy Willow

I adore this in winter bouquets - it gives such a edgy rustic wild woodland look and lots of drama.

Hellebores

Again a lovely range of colours but perfect if you are looking for dark purples and plums.

Rosemary

Ok not really a flower but I adore herbs in bouquets and as rosemary is so hardy its great for adding to winter bouquets and makes lovely table displays tucked into napkins.

 

 

 



 



 

Flowers In Season for an Autumn Wedding

Its part 3 of my 4 part series of posts on what flowers are in season for your wedding today.
Today I'm looking at Autumn flowers ... which is great timing as you may well be planning your Autumn wedding now .. I know I've had several stationery enquiries for Autumnal wedding stationery over the last couple of weeks.
I love Autumn colours - burgundys, plums, rusts, browns and dark greens are so evocative and cosy looking and these colours can also be incorporated in to your flowers.
Below are my favourites of the flowers which are in season for Autumn but obviously check with your florist as they will have many more options.

Dahlia

Dahlias are as wonderful for the autumn as they are for summer coming in some beautiful deep burgundy and russet colours. I like 'overflowing' bouquets for Autumn and these are perfect.

Berries

Perfect to add a really seasonal touch to your bouquet or arrangements - I especially love blackberries in bouquets.

Poppies

A pop of red at an Autumn wedding is always lovely and poppies are perfect for this.

Sunflowers

Hands up I've never been a big fan of sunflowers .. a bit too brash somehow. But recently I'm changing my opinion ... done in an unstructured wild flower way I've seen wedding bouquets with sunflowers which have looked absolutely beautiful. Its a definite end of summer harvest feel that I can really imagine in a barn wedding with lots of haybales and local cider!

Flowers In Season For A Summer Wedding

Following on with my series about what flowers to pick depending on the season you are getting married .. this week its Summer .. and after the heavy rain this week I could do with a bit of sunshine even if its just in floral form!
So here are some of my favourite flowers for summer bouquets and arrangements. As before check with your florist first to make sure he/she can get these in your area, but as a general guide this should give you an idea.

Dahlias

I adore Dahlias almost as much as I love Peonies in late spring! They are a gorgeous big blowsy flower which make a fantastic style statement on their own but also look beautiful when in with a hand tied mix of flowers in a fashionably 'messy' bouquet.

Hydrangeas

 

I have some gorgeous hydrangeas growing in my own garden. Mine are pink but they are also lovely in shades of blue through to purple. I love them so much I made hydrangea the main flower on my Tuscany range of stationery. Again they look beautiful mixed in with other flowers but as the heads are so big they also look amazing on their own en-masse.

 

 

Roses

Obviously a classic favourite for weddings, I especially love more English Country Tea Roses than the standard kind .. but then I'm very partial to a rustic looking hand tied bouquet. The standard variety still look amazing for simple one flower arrangements, and of course the wide variety of colours make roses incredibly versatile.

 

 

Sweet Peas

I love how delicate sweet peas are ... they look like they might fall apart at any second and are one of the flowers that really sums up summer somehow for me.

Daisies

I personally think daisies are a very underestimated flower! They are the perfect backdrop to other flowers in the garden - breaking up other colours with their white and sunny yellow centres .. and this applies in wedding bouquets as well. A sprinkling of daisies instantly gives relaxed country charm. You could also just have daisies for a strong country impact.

Perfect Peonies - My Favourite Wedding Flowers

I admit I have a total obsession with Peonies! Perhaps it's because they are such a beautiful short lived thing and only in season for such a short time .. or perhaps its because their big blowsy flowers are just so over the top and gorgeous ... whatever it is I adore them!
And joy upon joys we are now entering Peony season!
So any of you lovely brides who are planning on getting married between May and early July can definitely consider Peonies for your wedding flowers.
They look stunning in bouquets and as single stems so here are a few ideas on how to use them in your wedding ...

Fabulous Wedding Florists

Today I wanted to share with some of my favourites when it comes to choosing a florist for your wedding.
I adore flowers! I'm not particularly happy if I haven't got at least one vase of fresh flowers in the house somewhere .. usually in a cream jug on the dining room table ... so to contemplate a wedding without real flowers, for me, would just not be done!
So I'm a bit of junkie when it comes to catching up on what florists are doing for weddings across the country!

English Grown and In Season Wedding Flowers

Its no secret that I adore fresh flowers ... I have always have a jug of fresh flowers on my dining room table, as just passing them every day makes me smile.
So, for me ... although I know there are lots of fab alternatives! ... a wedding just wouldn't be right without flowers.

Which brings me onto an emerging trend I'm seeing for beautiful English wildflower style bouquets and arrangements, which are very much in season ... so much so you go to the garden to choose them!
I've recently discovered The Garden Gate Flower Company for example ... based in Fowey, Cornwall  ... The flowers they grow in their organic cutting garden are those which thrive in Cornwall. The changing nature of their bouquets reflect the changing seasons reminiscent of Cornwall’s famous gardens and hedgerows. http://www.thegardengateflowercompany.co.uk/ . This is just one example but I've heard of a few companies like this around the country who work in this way.

Its pretty well known that most florists can get pretty much most flowers all year round if they choose to import them from abroad and pick them up at the flower markets .... I know several florists who don't do this by the way but several who do.
Perhaps I'm being idealistic but I would love to see people go back to buying flowers in season, in the same way as we are seeing a return to buying our food in season.
I myself adore Peonies .. I would love to have peonies on my dining room table all year round! However I know that Peony season is short and so I restrict myself to having them for the months I can get them.

Now I am by no means a flower expert! I don't know hardly any flowers actual names by sight ... but would love to see what couples getting married and professional florists think about this whole issue. Perhaps there are more florists than I realise out there that are already doing this .. it would be great to hear from you.
All I know is that I've been told by a couple of florists when I'm after a specific look of flower that they can pretty much get hold of anything for me .. just from abroad.
